The Ocean Focus of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

Professor, Graduate School of Environment and Environment Science, Yokohama National UniversityIn October 2010 the Tenth Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in Nagoya, Japan. This year is significant in that we will examine CBD's 2010 target for "a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss Eand discuss future mid- to long-range targets. A variety of ocean topics, including Marine Protected Areas, are also scheduled to be discussed. -
An Initiative for the Creation of a New Sato-Umi in Ago Bay

While Shima-City developed around its fisheries industry, having been known since ancient times as Fishery Purveyors to the Imperial Household, in recent years productivity declines have seriously affected its economy. We now hope to establish a system of integrated coastal management around the theme of creating a new "sato-umi Ebased in Ago Bay, aiming for a sustainable symbiosis between local industry and the coastal environment.

The Seto Inland Sea has since ancient times been a transportation hub. As the port town of Tomo has long been a pillar of Seto Inland Sea culture, many resources reflecting its long history that would be useful in promoting the town lie awaiting to be uncovered. In taking the Inland Sea area as a whole to promote town revitalization, regional promotion that goes beyond administrative divisions is desirable. Town tourism is the first step in this direction.
