The Basic Act on Ocean Policy stipulates the promotion of ocean education in schools. To realize this aim, last year the "Recommendations for Promoting the Spread of Ocean Education in Elementary Schools" was compiled. Creating an ocean education program as soon as possible is desirable, but as is the case with all good education, I think ocean education should be promoted based on the rich experiences one has when becoming familiar with the sea, enjoys the sea, and interacts with the sea.

New Developments in Japan's Ocean Policy Research--On the Establishment of the Japan Society of Ocean Policy
Tadao KuribayashiProfessor Emeritus, Keio University/Special Adviser, Ocean Policy Research Foundation
The Japan Society of Ocean Policy came into being as a far-ranging academic society for researchers and experts to carry out comprehensive studies on ocean policy. Although our knowledge about the ocean is still insufficient, it is hoped that marine researchers and ocean experts from various fields can come together here to carry out cross-cutting collaboration on ocean policy, stimulating policy debate with Japan as a "true maritime state" as its goal.

The Port of Kobe's Initiatives for Securing Maritime Human Resources and Capacity Development
Tatsuo YadaMayor, City of Kobe
For Kobe, the port is a precious inheritance created by those that came before us, and one that we must pass on to the next generation. However, as ships have increased in size and container ships become more prevalent, port operations have moved farther from shore and the view of local children. For this reason, the City of Kobe has begun an initiative to secure the human resources necessary for port operations by creating a supplementary textbook for the youth of Kobe to learn more and become familiar with their port.
