In 2009, the Port of Yokohama is undertaking a variety of initiatives in celebration of its 150th anniversary, including plans to become a world-class integrated port facility that is both internationally competitive and environmentally friendly. From April, projects and events will be held in the city to promote new economic activities and introduce the charms of the city to its many visitors.

As resource development proceeds along the coasts of the Arctic Ocean, much attention in recent years has been given overseas to Polar Sea Engineering. 
The NCR Institute for Ocean Technology (Canada) , world renowned for Polar and Deep Sea Engineering, has set up a large scale Polar Sea tank in which efficiency and ice load tests are being actively carried out on models of actual equipment in icy conditions.

Sea turtles have been familiar to the Japanese from ancient times, appearing in stories such as the Tale of Urashima, as recorded in the Fudoki from Tango province. As sea turtles were for the most part not considered a marine resource
, they were not taken in great numbers but also were almost never the objects of ecological studies. 
However, in recent years, the spread of ideas concerning protection of the environment that has raised people's awareness has also been a boon for sea turtle conservation.
