The 'Creation of New Sato-Umi' project, currently centered on Ago Bay, is a unique attempt at restoring the natural environment and managing the coastal zone. Sato-Umi is a new concept for coastal sea management in which human interaction has resulted in a high degree of productivity and biodiversity, and in which deep relationship between human life and traditional culture has led to the coexistence of human and nature. Until the end of year 2007, the Ago Bay Restoration Project was a joint effort among industry, government, academia, and local residents, but from the year of 2008 the focus of activities is shifting to the local people and city of Shima, in Mie Prefecture. This report introduces local residents who are deeply involved in the project and their planned activities that inspire great hopes for the near future.

Of the 46 high schools around the country that include Fisheries in their curriculum, each is trying to remain competitive by making the best use of the facilities at their disposal and improving the educational contents of their curriculums to meet the needs of their local areas. There are some schools that are enhancing their curriculums to produce specialists able to enter the work force immediately as well as 'future specialists' who will continue their educations at university and other schools before beginning their careers. However, there is a need for a fundamental reorganization towards capacity building to support Japan's fisheries and other maritime industries in the future.

A marine science high school is about to be born in Kanagawa prefecture. The planning and preparation for the marine science high school is based on the article in the Basic Ocean Law to "promote school education and social education with regard to the oceans." While the curriculum will of course emphasize Fisheries education it will also include other areas of marine science. I would like to report here on the goals for the marine science high school, its marine science curriculum, and its marine learning center.
