Promoting Ocean Policy through the Basic Ocean Law

Former Vice-Minister, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and TourismIn light of the various ocean issues Japan faces and the importance of promoting ocean policy in a comprehensive and systematic manner, the Basic Ocean Law has great significance. It is important now that policies embodying the philosophy set forth in the Law are incorporated in the Basic Ocean Plan. As a Ministry involved in many aspects of ocean policy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism hopes to play an active role towards this end. -
Marine Science & Technology and the Basic Act on Ocean Policy

The Basic Act on Ocean Policy was enacted in April 2007. One of the basic principles in the Act is the necessity of improvement of ocean scientific knowledge. We have to make further promotion of research and development of ocean science and technology.

Structuring The University of Tokyo's Ocean Knowledge : The Ocean Alliance Challenge

The University of Tokyo's Ocean Alliance begins operations in July 2007. Its aim is to unite researchers engaged in research and education on ocean-related matters from across the university to promote interdisciplinary activities. Along with addressing a variety of ocean-related problems from a comprehensive and international perspective and enunciating a vision for Japan's future as a maritime state, the Alliance hopes to develop a cadre of ocean generalists who will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the ocean policies of the future.
