The submarine cable across the globe is around 800,000 kilometers long and its length would add up to 20 times around the world. It remains indispensable in the present-day broadband era. It carries information across the globe and has become quite simply an undersea highway. In Japan waters, there are needs not only to work on the maintenance of a stable communications infrastructure but also to find new ways of utilizing submarine cable, such as industrial promotion in isolated islands, environmental consciousness and removal of old cables.

Dredging and Beach Erosion
Takaaki UdaExecutive Director, Public Works Research Center
Consider dredging operation in a fishing port. If dredged materials are carried away and used for reclamation, beach erosion will occur on the surrounding coasts. Sediment deposited in a wave shelter zone is an obstacle, but the same materials become to be a valuable resource. It's necessary to take measures to return the dredged sand to the neighboring beaches by appropriate means. To this purpose, the revision of the legal system is required.
