A giant ocean wave over 20 meters in height is no longer a maritime myth. Now that its existence is becoming scientifically sound, what should scientists, engineers, shipbuilders, shipping bureaus, ship owners, and insurance companies do? As a scientist and engineer, I suggest the need for prediction and observation of the giant ocean waves in order to take measures to prevent related accidents.

This article focuses on the air-sea exchange of carbon dioxide, which is of direct concern to the prediction of global warming, and introduces recent approach to its quantitative estimation, with special reference to the wind-wave breaking. Oceanographic data will become increasingly important in the age to come, and focused researches will be essential from a new perspective, such as the development of data acquisition system from ocean-based platforms.

People tend to think that marine disasters are like issues of the past. However, disasters are unending and strike when people lose their memory of the previous one. There is a need to reconsider the issue from a new perspective and renew measures.
