Commemorative Symposium for Global Nature Positive Summit 2026

HostOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

The conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems is one of the key policy objectives of SDG 14 and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Under this framework, the UN global goal of “Nature Positive,” which aims to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, has become a powerful driver accelerating policy implementation. In line with this trend, a rapidly growing number of companies are disclosing information based on the framework of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). The most critical challenges are how to measure progress toward becoming Nature Positive, and what level of effort is sufficient to claim Nature Positive.

The second Global Nature Positive Summit, an international conference that discusses these challenges, will be held in Kumamoto in July 2026. In this commemorative seminar, we welcome Mr. Marco Lambertini, Convenor of the Nature Positive Initiative (NPI), who is scheduled to visit Japan in April. Mr. Lambertini will explain the latest developments in the “State of Nature (SON) indicators” and the “requirements for claiming Nature Positive” currently being developed by NPI. Following the keynote speech, a talk session will be held to discuss the essence and challenges of Nature Positive initiatives.

In addition, the NPI-produced video “Becoming Nature Positive” will be screened in Japan for the first time. Through these discussions, the seminar aims to contribute to the success of the Global Nature Positive Summit 2026 in July, as well as to the advancement of subsequent international discussions, initiatives, and global cooperation.
