Blue Impact Finance –“Actions for System Change”

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute (OPRI), Social Innovation and Investment Foundation (SIIF), Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI)

The marine environment and its resources play a crucial role in our social and economic systems, spanning food, industry, energy, and environmental sustainability. However, they face significant threats, including overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation, and climate change, all of which have profound impacts on human livelihoods. In response, the impact investment community, particularly in Europe and North America, has increasingly focused on addressing these challenges. Blue Impact Finance (BIF) has emerged as a key topic at global forums such as GIIN and GSG conferences and the UN Ocean Conference, driving initiatives such as €5 billion in support from ocean venture capital funds.

Despite Japan’s rich maritime heritage and abundant cultural, natural, and economic assets as an island nation, the concept of BIF has yet to gain mainstream recognition. However, sustainability initiatives for marine conservation are emerging across various regions, signaling potential for future expansion. Given that many Asian countries also rely on the ocean as a vital economic resource, there is significant potential for regional collaboration and shared learning to foster a resilient and sustainable blue economy.

This conference brings together leaders from international ocean investment funds and pioneering domestic stakeholders to showcase concrete investment and business cases. Through discussions on key challenges and actions to advance BIF in Japan and Asia, as well as networking opportunities, the event aims to catalyze future business development in this evolving sector.
