9/14 The 191st Ocean Forum
"The First Port Call of the 'Statsraad Lehmkuhl' in Asia and the 'UN Decade of Ocean Science': What We Must Do to Correct the Knowledge Divide in Ocean Science"

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

In 2017, the United Nations declared the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. However, while small island developing states and least developed countries have great potential for developing ocean resources and blue economies, they still lack the human, organizational, and financial resources for ocean science, thus resulting in inadequate scientific knowledge and difficulties in proper management. Therefore, resolving these issues is an urgent task if the Decade is to proceed effectively.

At this juncture, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, which is currently operating the One Ocean Expedition, a research voyage circumnavigation of the globe, will call at the Port of Yokohama as its first port of call in Asia. Seizing this opportunity, we invite stakeholders in ocean science, including Dr. Vladimir RYABININ, Executive Secretary of IOC/UNESCO, which proposes and promotes the "UN Decade of Ocean Science," and François HOULLIER, Président directeur général, IFREMER, who leads French ocean science and policy, to participate in the 191st Ocean Forum as it aims to explore ways of international collaboration to further accelerate the Decade based on the progress report of the expedition.
