3/14 The 187th Ocean Forum “Tonga Relief Appeal for Our Future”
Organizer:Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)
The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai undersea volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga erupted on January 15, 2022, triggering a tsunami and causing an enormous disaster that affected more than 80% of the country’s population. With the help of emergency assistance extended by Japan and other countries, many Tongan residents are restoring their daily lives and the country is now in the process of recovery.
While the disaster has temporarily raised Japanese people’s interest in Tonga, long-term attention will be critical for the country's recovery.
The first session of this forum will feature remarks by His Excellency Dr. T. Suka Mangisi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Tonga to Japan, who will speak about the recent situation in Tonga. In the second session, Professor Dr. Yuko Otsuka of Sophia University will moderate a dialogue between Ambassador Mangisi and individuals who have a connection with Tonga in order to increase Japanese people's interest in the country. This forum aims to foster a new bilateral relationship that will connect the people of Tonga and Japan across a distance of 8,000 kilometers in the short-term, and support the long-term rebuilding process of Tonga.
