International Symposium Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Japan-Palau Diplomatic Relations
Achieving a Sustainable Ocean – Palau’s Initiatives and International Partnership

The Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF) is pleased to invite you to attend the International Symposium “Achieving a Sustainable Ocean – Palau’s Initiatives and International Partnership” on Monday November 11, 2019, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and the Republic of Palau. The Republic of Palau, led by H.E. Tommy Remengesau Jr., President of the Republic of Palau, spearheads progressive ocean polices. President Remengesau made an announcement last month (October 2019) that the Republic of Palau will host the 7th Our Ocean Conference in Palau from 17 – 18 August 2020. With this backdrop, the international community has been giving increased attention to Palau’s ocean policies and actions.

In this connection, President Remengesau will speak at the symposium regarding Palau’s progressive ocean policies and actions, as well as the work carried out by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, to which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan also participates as a member. President Remengesau will also share his aspiration for the forthcoming 7th Our Ocean Conference be held in Palau next August. In addition, H.E. Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg, Minister of State, Republic of Palau, and H.E. Francis M. Matsutaro, Ambassador of the Republic of Palau to Japan, will speak at the panel discussion with Japanese stakeholders regarding ocean related activities in Palau and international partnership.
