The 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, which will be held on November 8th, has attracted global attention. In retrospect, there were two surprises in this electoral process. The first surprise was Mr. Trump as the nominee of the Republican Party for President. Mr. Trump was considered as a “fringe candidate” in the beginning of the race. However, he has since acquired huge support. The other surprise was that Mr. Sanders made an impressive showing at the polls against Ms. Clinton, who was heavily favored. Mr. Trump’s base remains white blue-collar workers, and Mr. Sanders won enormous support from the youth during the primary elections season. The underlining cause of this is a discontent with the status quo and distrust of elites. And it illustrates the possibility of creating “radical” political leaders through democratic process. As a result, some argue that the democracy itself must be re-examined.
