On September 27, 2016, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation hosted Alok Sharma MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Minister for Asia and the Pacific) to talk about “International Cooperation: UK and Japan”.
As the United Kingdom prepares to leave the EU, there are questions about the UK’s role in the world. Mr Sharma addressed this, and the growing strength of UK-Japan relations. He discussed security and foreign policy issues, including in Asia.

He was elected as a conservative Member of Parliament in 2010. He served as a Conservative Party Vice Chairman from 2012 to 2015, and was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Infrastructure Envoy to India in 2016. He started his current assignment in July 2016 taking the responsibility of Asia and the Pacific, reporting directly to the Foreign Secretary. Prior to entering Parliament, he worked in finance, including at Nikko Securities.
