Experts' dialogues on RussiaⅡ

FY2026

Implementing Agency  Sasakawa Peace Foundation
Year

First year of a two-year project

Project Type Self Operated
Budget 26,000,000 yen

Project Outline

Strategic bilateral dialogue between Russia and Japan effectively ground to a halt following the outbreak of war in the Ukraine and the worsening standoff between Russia and the United States. It seems increasingly likely that the changing nature of relations between Russia and the United States under the Trump administration will have an impact on the Japanese policy stance toward Russia. This project utilizes networks of Russia and United States researchers cultivated by SPF over the years to provide a vehicle for dialogue and discussion among expert analysts from multiple countries. Through Track 2 dialogues between Japan and Russia, Japan and the United States, and Japan, Russia and the United States, we consider the impact of ongoing developments in U.S.-Russia relations on Japan's policy stance toward Russia and generate important insights to inform future diplomatic efforts.
