International Webinar
“Ocean Panel’s policy recommendations: Promoting sustainable ocean economies and international partnership”
(December 3, 2020)

November 30, 2020

On December 3, 2020, the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF), headed by President Atsushi Sunami, will co-organize a webinar entitled “Ocean Panel’s policy recommendations: Promoting sustainable ocean economies and international partnership” with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, and in cooperation with the Embassy of Palau and Embassy of Norway in Japan.

The webinar will present the results of the policy recommendations issued by the “High Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy.” Launched in 2018 by the initiative of the Government of Norway, the panel is composed of 15 members including the heads of states of 14 countries – Norway, Palau, Japan, Indonesia, Portugal, Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Fiji, Chile, and Australia – as well as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean. Together, the panel acts as a platform to discuss the importance of balancing economic production alongside the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean.

These policy recommendations, to be issued on December 2, 2020, have the aim of strengthening joint efforts to realize a sustainable marine economy and promote international cooperation. In light of the launch of these recommendations, webinars spearheaded by the member countries as well as relevant organizations will take place in each country on December 3, 2020.

In Japan, OPRI-SPF, which is a member of the Advisory Network supporting the activities of the panel, will co-organize a webinar with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, in cooperation with the Embassy of Norway in Japan and the Embassy of the Republic of Palau in Japan, to discuss the contents of the recommendations with relevant experts and officials.

At the webinar, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will make remarks and Ambassador Keiichi Ono of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who acts as the “Sherpa” for Prime Minister Suga, will present the panel's policy recommendations. Dr. Hide Sakaguchi, Managing Director for the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and member of the panel’s Expert Group, as well other experts and stakeholders will participate in the webinar to discuss strategies and future perspectives to work toward realizing this new ocean action agenda.
