The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) and Conciliation Resources (CR) are pleased to invite you to an online launch event presenting two new publications on October 15, 2020, 18:00-20:00 JST. The results of a new public opinion survey, which found that the majority of the Japanese population support peacebuilding activities including dialogue with armed groups, will be presented alongside the launch of CR’s most recent Accord publication, Pioneering Peace Pathways, which presents analysis of how to start peace processes. Discussions will reflect on the relevance of the publications’ findings for Japan’s foreign and development policy – including Japan’s potential role in peace mediation support.

Internal and regional conflicts are still rampant around the world. Covid-19 and the climate crisis exacerbate existing conflicts and drive new ones. Efforts to support building sustainable peace – including early intervention and peace mediation – are more urgent than ever.
To add to the body of knowledge about facilitating and supporting peace processes, SPF and CR are pleased to present two new publications. The first is “Pioneering Peace Pathways: Making connections to end violent conflict,” the latest edition in CR’s Accord publication series. This explores how early peace initiatives – including mediation support – can enable transitions from war to peace in ongoing violent conflict. The second is “Public support for peacebuilding: Public attitudes in Japan towards peacebuilding and dialogue with armed groups,” which analyses the results from a public opinion survey on attitudes towards peacebuilding conducted in December 2019. The report includes comparisons to findings from earlier surveys conducted in the UK, the US and Germany in 2017.
The latest Accord publication is now available on the CR website and both reports will be available for download from the SPF and CR websites from October 15.
We look forward to exploring the importance of Japan's active involvement in promoting peace dialogues and conflict resolution, particularly in Asia.
