Dr. Atsushi Sunami, president of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), and Mr. Abdullah Allafi, vice president of the Libyan Presidential Council, met at the foundation in Tokyo on January 22, 2025, to discuss the Libyan Peace Institute (LPI), which was established with the aim of building peace and achieving national reconciliation in Libya. The two parties reached a basic agreement to cooperate and continue to discuss potential areas for collaboration in the future.

The Libyan Peace Institute was established in August 2024 as a research base in the field of peacebuilding for national reconciliation in Libya, which has been in turmoil since the fall of the Gaddafi regime in 2011. In January 2024, Vice President Allafi and others met with President Sunami to outline their plans to establish the Libyan Peace Institute and ask for the cooperation of the foundation.

During the meeting this time, Libyan Peace Institute President Abdullah Hameed expressed his desire to learn from SPF's peacebuilding initiatives in Asia. President Sunami noted that he hoped to begin this cooperation by visiting Libya to deepen his understanding of the situation in the country.
