Presentation of the "Recommendations for the Success of the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8)"

April 25, 2018
3 Min. Read

On behalf of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Nobuo Tanaka), Ms. Junko Chano, the executive director of the foundation, presented Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii with a document entitled "Recommendations for the Success of the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting" on April 25, 2018.

Upon receiving the document, Mr. Horii said, "Many of the things pointed out in this proposal came up in talks that took place when I made an official visit to the Pacific Island nations. I will ensure that these recommendations are taken seriously and shared with a wide range of stakeholders, both inside and outside of the government."

Recommendations for the Success of the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8)

Since holding the Pacific Island Nation Conference in 1988 and establishing the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund the following year, the Foundation has undertaken various activities and established good relations in the Pacific Island region. In recent years, Pacific Island nations have had increased influence in international society on topics such as the fishery industry and climate change. As the world continues to change, now is the time for Japan to undertake initiatives to address national, regional and global issues along with the Pacific Island nations. Therefore, on the occasion of the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting held on May 18 and 19, 2018, the Foundation sought to further strengthen relations between Japan – itself an island nation – and the Pacific Island nations by making recommendations to the Japanese government.
