The Sasakawa Peace Foundation held a panel discussion on U.S. foreign policy trends and challenges, featuring a group of leading foreign policy experts representing the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI), a non-profit, non-partisan think tank based in Washington, D.C.
Three distinguished U.S. opinion leaders with extensive experiences working in the U.S. government and congress evaluated the recent developments in U.S. foreign policy, including the U.S. response to Syria and the U.S. policy to "rebalance" toward Asia, and identify the trends and factors that influence these trends. Panelists include: Dr. William Kristol, a famed political commentator and editor of conservative magazine The Weekly Standard; Dr. Gary Schmitt, a former staff director of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; and Mr. Christopher J. Griffin, the Executive Director of FPI who most recently served as legislative director to then-Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (ID-CT).
What is the future outlook for U.S. diplomatic, military, and economic engagement abroad? What inter- or intra-party differences are there regarding U.S. engagement overseas? Did the recent government shutdown impact U.S. foreign policy and credibility abroad? What are U.S. expectations toward its allies and partners including Japan? The panelists shared their thoughts on these questions, as well as offered their thoughts on how the United States views the recent developments in Japan's security policy under the Abe administration given recent U.S. foreign policy trends.
