The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has invited Dr. Aaron L. Friedberg, Professor at Princeton University to give a lecture on the update of his book, A Contest for Supremacy: China, America and the Struggle for Mastery in Asia( Japanese translation of this book was published in June, 2013), in Tokyo on June 26th, 2013. Two years ago, in his book, Professor Friedberg discussed that the ultimate objective of China's strategy would be to become the preponderant power in Asia by replacing the United States and the US-China relations would be tense over time due to differences in their domestic political system and ideology. Now, having seen changes in China's behavior and the aggravated Japan-China relations, have US-China relations also changed? If so, how? In the course of the lecture, Professor Friedberg provided his recent analysis and discussed about the background of China's assertiveness and US-China relations.

Professor Friedberg is a distinguished scholar in international politics who served as a Deputy Assistant for National Security Affairs in the Office of the Vice President from 2003 to 2005. He was also working for Mitt Romney, a Republican presidential candidate in 2012 as a member of his Foreign Policy and National Security Advisory Team. We also invited Professor Hiroshi Nakanishi of Kyoto University as a moderator, and Dr. Shinji Yamaguchi from National Institute for Defense Studies as a commentator.
