Lecture Information
On June 19,2013, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation hosted The Honorable J Dennis Hastert, Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, to assess the current US politics and the relationship between Obama administration and the 113th Congress. Under the circumstance that the Republican holds a majority of seats in the House, and many of the Republican members are more conservative than ever before, the US political atmosphere has become increasingly tense. Speaker Hastert analyzed this current US political tension, addressing the critical issues that the second Obama administration is negotiating with the Congress, such as Annual Appropriations, Debt Ceiling, and TPP.
Mr. Hastert worked as Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007. During the tenure as Speaker of the House, he focused his efforts on lowering taxes, improving education, strengthening Social Security and Medicare and bolstering national defense. He also has a strong connection with Japan since 1970s and contributed to strengthen the US-Japan relationship. Prior to serving in Congress, he served three terms in the Illinois General Assembly. Since 2010, he has served as Honorary Co-Chair of the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC), with a particular focus our Congressional Study Group on Japan.
