Peace Mediation in a Turbulent Middle East: Roles, Achievements, and Challenges

Hosted by: The Sasakawa Peace Foundation
Co-hosts: Keio Center for Strategy

The Middle East continues to experience escalating and expanding conflicts, including the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Yet, amid these heightened military tensions, regional countries have continued to pursue diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts through dialogue and mediation.
In recent years, many Middle Eastern countries have positioned peace mediation as a key pillar of their foreign policies, actively facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties and engaging in ceasefire negotiations. Qatar, Oman, and Türkiye, in particular, have played important roles in various diplomatic initiatives aimed at conflict resolution and de-escalation, both within and beyond the region. These include nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Such mediation diplomacy has become an increasingly important factor shaping regional politics and international relations.
Against this backdrop, the Peace Mediation Center of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation is pleased to welcome Professor Sultan Barakat, Distinguished Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar and a leading scholar and practitioner in peace mediation and conflict resolution in the Middle East.
Drawing on his extensive academic and practical experience, Professor Barakat will examine political developments and conflict dynamics in the broader Middle East through the lens of peace mediation. He will also discuss the achievements and challenges of mediation efforts undertaken by regional countries, with particular attention to the distinctive characteristics and role of Qatar as a “mediation state.”
We warmly invite you to join us for this timely discussion.
