One year after the fall of Kabul:
The current situation in Afghanistan and future prospects

Organized by: Sasakawa Peace Foundation

One year has passed since the Taliban took over the capital city of Kabul on August 15, 2021, followed by the withdrawal of U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan on August 31. There are concerns that people's lives are becoming even more difficult due to the economic crisis and poverty spurred by international sanctions, the deteriorating public health and humanitarian crises due to the loss of foreign aid, terrorism and drugs, and restrictions on girls' education and women's occupations, which have been increasingly criticized especially by Western countries. Against this backdrop, the interim government has failed to gain international recognition, and there is no clear path for its return to the international community.

What is the situation in Afghanistan, what are the prospects for the future, and how can the international community help to resolve the situation? The Sasakawa Peace Foundation will hold a webinar on the current situation and future prospects in Afghanistan, one year after restoration of the rule by the Taliban. In addition to an analysis by Ambassador Tadamichi Yamamoto, former representative of UNAMA, we will hear perspectives from other Muslim countries that are not often heard in Japan, and in particular, we will welcome Mr. Ahmad Azam, the Special Advisor to Foreign Minister of Malaysia on Afghanistan, which has close ties with the Taliban regime. We will ask him how he analyzes the current situation of the Taliban regime.

The webinar will present a valuable opportunity to think about the future of Afghanistan. We look forward to your participation.
