(2015.01.12-13)

Tensions in the Asia-Pacific are on the rise. Under this circumstance, the UK-Japan Strategic Dialogue considered future developments and recent achievements in the bilateral relationship – such as the 2012 Defence Cooperation Memorandum, the adoption of the “Proactive Contribution to Peace” policy into Japan’s National Security Strategy, and last year’s UK-Japan Defence Equipment Co-operation Framework.
On the frist day, we have invited Mr Akira Sato, the State Minister of Defence from Japan as well as Mr Rory Stewart who is the Chairman of the Comons Defence Committee. On the second day, Mr Itsunori Onodera, former Minister of Defence, gave the keynote speech. Throughout this two-day conference, we have deepend discussion on Japan-UK intelligence cooperation, cyber cooperation and procurement cooperation. Japan-US-UK trilateral cooperation was also discussed. Adding to that, the UK's involvement to East Asia was debated by Japanese and British panelists. This conference contributed to Japan-UK mutual understanding in the field of security.
