Project Outline
Faced with emerging challenges including rising security threats near home, domestic resource constraints, and the general public dislike of taking risks abroad, advanced states have found it necessary to re-calculate policy options to engage in international peace operations. Some countries like Japan are seeking alternative ways to contribute to peace operations that does not rely on troop deployment. To understand and respond to this trend, this project will conduct research on current international peace operations operated under the UN and non-UN initiatives, and will examine how Japan can better contribute to these global efforts in the future. Through these studies, we hope to present policy alternatives to the Japanese government that can both enhance Japan’s influence abroad and contribute to the stability of international society.
