Soft Recognition: Enabling Participation of Self-Determination Groups in Intergovernmental Organisations

This report examines the interrelationship between international affairs and domestic politics. In today's globalized world, challenges such as climate change, migration, and pandemics transcend national borders and influence domestic issues across countries. The report specifically focuses on "soft recognition" mechanisms that enable self-determining groups to participate in intergovernmental organizations, exploring both the benefits this participation offers and its potential for conflict resolution. The findings provide valuable insights for states and multilateral organizations alike.

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation and Conciliation Resources, a UK-based peace NGO, conducted an online public survey in December 2019 to better understand Japanese people's attitudes and perceptions about peacebuilding. This survey provides new insights into the Japanese people's understanding of peacebuilding and their perceptions of peace efforts.

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has been conducting research on democracy and civil liberties in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, in collaboration with the Habibie Center, an Indonesian think tank. This report summarizes the challenges of the three countries on democracy and civil liberties, and their recommendations to respective governments and civil society.
