Project Outline
Local communities in Mindanao in the Philippines (specifically, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) and Papua in Indonesia have long been affected by violence and division, stemming from a history of conflict, political grievances, and other underlying factors, and the resulting unstable security situation remains a concern. In this context, community-driven mediation is seen as an effective approach to peacebuilding and conflict prevention. This project leverages the foundation’s networks and experience in mediation support in conflict-affected areas. It will analyze existing customary mediation practices in local communities, develop and pilot a model of community mediation consistent with domestic law and contemporary values such as human rights, and present practical insights to the international community for peaceful conflict resolution.
