Reseach Project on Comprehensive Nuclear Policy

    FY2026

    Implementing Agency  Sasakawa Peace Foundation
Year First year of a two-year project
    Project Type Self Operated
    Budget 10,000,000 yen

    Project Outline

Postwar Japan has relied on the extended nuclear deterrence provided by the Japan–U.S. alliance, supported the nuclear non-proliferation regime, engaged in diplomatic efforts related to nuclear disarmament and arms control, and promoted the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

However, there is no comprehensive strategy that integrates all of these elements.

As instability in the global nuclear order increases, Japan must confront nuclear challenges directly by accurately understanding the evolving structures and dynamics surrounding nuclear issues worldwide.

This project brings together policy researchers and practitioners from Japan and abroad with diverse expertise in nuclear issues. It aims to clarify the global nuclear landscape from historical, policy, and structural perspectives, while developing recommendations for a comprehensive nuclear strategy for Japan.
