Project Outline
As China continues to build up its nuclear arsenal, questions are emerging about the credibility of U.S. deterrence and its potential impact on regional stability. In particular, China's expansion of both conventional and nuclear forces may have significant strategic implications for the future security environment. This study draws on the insights of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) and its dialogues with experts and analysts in the United States to develop Japan-U.S. strategies for strengthening extended deterrence. Topics such as the potential introduction of nuclear weapons and nuclear sharing policies are explored, and the resulting insights will be widely shared with the public through publications and events.
