    Insights into Japan-U.S. Relations

    FY2022

    Implementing Agency Sasakawa Peace Foundation
Year Third year of a three-year project
    Program Type Self Operated
    Budget 71,900,000 yen

    Project Outline

This project produces and distributes research and information focusing on international relations, foreign policy, and security issues, all of which are related to the Japan-U.S. relations. In the face of changes to the international order and the regional security environment, let alone the two countries’ political landscapes, it is increasingly urgent not only to strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance but also to deepen mutual understanding as a foundation for Japan-U.S. relations and explore a different form of relationship and measures to cooperate in the new era of the two countries. In order to achieve these goals, we need not only to understand the changing American society, including deepening social divisions that we have seen as the background to the Trump administration coming to power, but also to have an accurate awareness of the changes in the United States and the world order, as well as its implications toward Japan-U.S. relations, while looking at the history and broader past experiences.

This depth of insight opens new doors for us to explore and understand the reality of our world today and create a new form of collaboration toward establishing stability and a new order on a regional and international scale.

To this end, in cooperation with a group of Japanese and American experts including up and coming and mid-career specialists, this project conducts research and analysis. Through these research sub-projects, we study the themes of “changes in the United States,” “Japan-U.S. relations in a diversifying diplomatic and security environment,” and “the changing international order and the roles of Japan and the United States,” and compile the full range ideas and approaches with mid- to long-term perspectives into reports and op-ed papers to be shared through our website and social media accounts.
