Project Outline
This project produces specialized research and distributes information on themes including international relations, foreign policy, and security issues, all of which are related to the Japan-U.S. relationship. In the face of changes to the international order, to the regional security environment, as well as the continuing evolution of the two countries’ political landscapes, it is increasingly urgent not only to strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance but also to deepen mutual understanding as a foundation for Japan-U.S. relations and explore a new relationship and ways to cooperate in the new era of the two countries.
In order to achieve these goals, we need not only to understand the changing American society, including deepening social divisions that we have seen as the background to the Trump administration coming to power, but also to have an accurate and sincere awareness of the changes in the United States and the world order, as well as its implications toward Japan-U.S. relations, while looking at the history and broader past experiences. This depth of insight opens new doors for us to explore and understand the reality of our world today and create a new form of collaboration toward establishing stability on a regional and international scale.
To this end, in cooperation with a group of Japanese and American experts including up and coming and mid-career specialists, this project conducts research and analysis. Through these research projects, we consider the themes of “changes in the United States,” “Japan-U.S. relations in a diversifying diplomatic and security environment,” and “the changing international order and the roles of Japan and the United States,” and compile the full range ideas and approaches with mid- to long-term perspectives into reports and op-ed papers to be shared through the foundation’s website and social media accounts.
