Event Report: Gender Lens Investing Impact Measurement & Management (IMM) Workshop

March 25, 2024
On March 15, 2024, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) convened a 90-minute webinar on Impact Measurement and Management (IMM) for Gender Lens Investing (GLI) in partnership with 2X Global and Brightlight, SPF’s impact advisor. The key objective was to share SPF and Brightlight’s experience and learnings in integrating gender lens investing into an investment fund, from the design of a gender lens investment thesis through to constructing an impact rating system and manager engagement. Over 50 participants attended the online webinar from all over the world consisting of primarily investors and gender lens practitioners. An opening poll revealed over a third pf attendees were in process of developing an IMM framework, highlighting that this workshop was timely. In addition, the other 50% of participants indicated they are already conducting IMM activities signalling that there is a growing movement of GLI practitioners in the field.
Ms. Ayaka Matsuno, Director of the Gender Investment and Innovation Program of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, kicked off the session by sharing an opening remark and thanked all participants for attending. She also briefly outlined the journey our Asia Women Impact Fund has been on intentionally integrating IMM practices within investment process and the importance of continuing to learn from each other in this space to advance impact outcomes for women.
Ms. Marijn Wiersma (Director of Community and Innovation, 2X Global) shared an overview of 2X Global’s three strategic pillars, namely building investor capacity, advancing GLI standards, and shifting markets through additional capital. 2X Global recently recorded a significant milestone in reaching $30 billion being deployed for gender lens investing globally through its members since its inception in 2018.
Ms. Liebe Jeannot (Programme Manager, 2X Global) announced 2X Global’s new 2X certification process which aims to enhance rigour, support third party verification, and further improve disclosure practices for GLI. 2X Global expects this will help unlock even more capital for GLI whilst promoting better impact data transparency.
Thereafter, Mr. Ivan Chew, Director of Impact at Brightlight, shared an overview of “How” to construct a Gender lens IMM framework and best practices whilst integrating SPF’s Asia Women Impact Fund (AWIF) real-life experience. He covered five key components which are Design and Framing, Integrating Gender Lens into Investment Process, Impact Rating and Risk Analysis, Manager Engagement and Monitoring and Learning. Brightlight also discussed challenges in implementing an IMM framework and strongly encouraged participants who are keen to get started to explore readily available GLI IMM resources and reach out to external experts if required.

The webinar ended with a Q&A session where there were robust discussions around the design of impact rating and risk scorecards, the integration of 2X criteria alongside other frameworks such as EU taxonomy, and the growing trend of incorporating gender and climate and the challenges of executing on both mandates.

Participants who are keen to find out more on SPF and AWIF’s approach to IMM can refer to the Asia Women Impact Fund IMM Report 2023.
