Promoting Men's New Roles Phase II
FY2021
Implementing Agency | Sasakawa Peace Foundation |

Year | First year of a three-year project |
Project Type | Self Operated |
Budget | 20,000,000 yen |
Project Outline
In order to make progress toward greater gender equality, this project aims to propose policy recommendations for the international community on new roles for men, in cooperation with experts and organizations in Japan and abroad. It is argued that so-called “traditional” gender roles, which generally take the view that men are valued by their ability to compete for career advancement or assuming positions of power, inhibits the active participation of women and hinders progress toward a more gender-equal society. In phase I of this project (2018-2020), a thorough and critical investigation of the traditional roles of men mainly in Japan and East Asia was conducted, resulting in proposals for policies necessary to transform these traditional ideas in line with Japan’s Gender Equality Bureau Cabinet Office’s Fifth Basic Plan for Gender Equality. Phase II of this project (2021-2023) will continue to pursue the same goal – promoting progress toward a gender equal society by proposing new roles for men – based on the previous research and findings, but will expand the scope and formulate policies and programs targeting men in the international community with new partners around the world.
