Northeast India, a region that connects South and Southeast Asia, has been gaining attention as a region geopolitically vital for the Indian government’s Act East policy as well as the Japanese government’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy. However, the region’s complex history and enduring divisions between communities have sparked conflict for many years. To build on the outcomes from the foundation’s “Looking into the Past for a Future: Shared History of North East India and Its Neighbours I – II,” which was conducted over three years since FY 2017, this project aims to continue initiatives in support of intellectual dialogue and building an understanding of the “shared history” within the region and the surrounding countries. The goal of these activities is to ultimately improve the region’s connectivity with neighboring countries, lower barriers to regional development projects, and promote mutual understanding. Furthermore, this project invites future leaders from Northeast India including researchers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs, to Japan to learn more about local initiatives, explore specific areas for mutual cooperation, and deepen ties between Japan and Northeast India.
