[Report] Invitation to faculty members of St. Anthony's College Audio-Visual Archive, Northeast India, for Capacity Building in Japan

March 18, 2024
As part of "Preserving and Sharing Histories and Memories of Northeast India and Asia," our Foundation invited five participants from Northeast India AV Archive (NEIAV), located on the campus of St. Anthony's College in the state of Meghalaya, Northeast India, to Japan from February 14 to 22, 2024. Training and study visits were made to related institutions in Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Tokyo, to improve NEIAV's organizational management and technical capabilities, and to expand its professional knowledge and human network.

NEIAV was established in 2019 as part of the Department of Mass Media at St. Anthony's College. It works to document ethnic and community stories that are orally transmitted in Northeast India, and to pass them on to the next generation in the form of archival material, and to expand them to other regions beyond the borders of the country.

In Fukuoka, with the full support of the Fukuoka City Public Library, a large library with a video room and mini-theater, NEIAV participants toured the library and received training on three types of archives: documents, video, and photographs. The participants also visited the School of Design, the Media Design Course at Kyushu University, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. While learning about the management and preservation methods of archival materials, they absorbed a lot of skills to see the handling of materials and the advanced technical skills of Japanese experts.

One of the participants presents the diversity of the Northeast region of India and the activities of NEIAV.

In Nagasaki, the participants learned about effective displays, lighting, and layout at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. St. Anthony's College is currently building a new facility for NEIAV on the college campus, and after the move, NEIAV plans to open the archival materials to the public. In addition to the effective management of the valuable materials, from the perspective of how to deepen visitor's understanding of the value of the archival materials and the archive itself, the participants seem to have been stimulated by the various innovations at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.

In Tokyo, the participants also visited the National Film Archive of Japan and its branch libraries to learn about proper document management methods and to deepen their understanding of the equipment needed to restore and recover archival materials at Tokyo Kohon, which has advanced technology in digital restoration and recovery of film, video, and sound.

Presentation at our office

NEIAV is one of the largest archive facilities in Northeast India, where many ethnic minorities coexist and where there are diverse cultural assets in terms of language, history, art and so forth. Our Foundation will continue to support NEIAV in the fiscal year of 2024 so that the rich memories of the region can be captured in archival materials and passed on to the next generation for diversified and peaceful society.
