Academic/Professional Background
Akiko Horiba is Director of the Center for Mediation Support at The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, with extensive experience in conflict analysis, peacebuilding, and Southeast Asian studies, including long-standing engagement in peace dialogue and mediation support in Thailand’s Deep South (Patani).
She is Lecturer at Institute of Science Tokyo, Rikkyo University, and Hosei University. She is also a Fellow of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (WPS), a Member of the NATO Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace and Security, and a Trustee of Sophia School Corporation.
Prior to joining The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, she served as Policy Secretary to a Member of the House of Representatives of Japan. She holds a Ph.D. in Area Studies (Indonesia and conflict analysis) from Sophia University in Tokyo and a Master of Theological Studies from Weston Jesuit School of Theology (now part of Boston College), Massachusetts, USA.
