Academic/Professional Background
Shingo Yamagami joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, Law Faculty.
He also studied at the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University.
Throughout his 40 year-old career in the foreign service, he served in Washington, D.C., Hong Kong, Geneva, London and Canberra.
After working as the Director of the Second North America Division and the Director of the Treaties Division, he was seconded to the National Police Agency (Director of Administration, lbaraki Prefectural Police).
He went on to become Political Minister, Embassy in UK, Deputy Director-General of the International Legal Affairs Bureau, Ambassador for Policy Planning and International Security Policy.
He was seconded to the」apan Institute of International Affairs as acting Director-General.
Thereafter he was promoted to Director-General of Intelligence and Analysis Service, and then Director-General of Economic Affairs Bureau of MOFA.
He served as Ambassador to Australia from December 2020 to April 2023.
He left MOFA at the end of 2023.
He became Special Advisor of TMI Associates in January 2024 and Senior Fellow of Sasakawa Peace Foundation in April 2024.
