Ocean Policy

South Korea

With the launch of President Park Guen-hye's government in February 2013, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs that was in charge of ocean policies was restructured into the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. While the main duties of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs were to maintain the shore and to develop coastal areas connected to the land, developments in the fisheries industry and other initiatives were relatively slow. The one-year ocean policy of the newly established Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries set out to continue the original work involving maintenance of the shore and development projects of coastal areas, in addition to the implementation of a policy to devise a framework for the conservation and development of fisheries. Also worthy of attention is the formulation and promotion of a long-term plan to open an Arctic Ocean sea route.
