International Seabed Authority: Past Progress and Future Prospects

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, mineral resources on the Area are considered the "common heritage of mankind" and are managed by the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Since its establishment in 1994, the ISA has developed rules and regulations for the exploration of mineral resources. Deliberations are currently ongoing for the formulation of exploitation regulations with a target date of summer 2025, but there are many issues that need to be resolved.

In the Ise-Shima region where we live, changes in the marine environment due to climate variation are causing changes in the ecosystem. Instead of turning away from this problem, we have been working to solve it, believing that we need to tackle the problem head on. A fishing method that is still used only by a minority may save Japan's fishing industry in the future. I am working hard with such a hope.

Learning and exploring the connections between the ocean and people is fascinating and fun.This in itself is an activity that reconnects us to the ocean and helps form an answer to the question of how we are to live with the ocean. 3710Lab (Minato Lab) was established to develop this activity.
