In 2005, a fisheries department was established at an inland high school, in Gunma prefecture, the second in the country after one in Tochigi prefecture. As it reaches its tenth anniversary, this article introduces the steps involved in establishing the Fisheries Course, its activities to date, and its role and challenges. As the birthrate decline is especially serious in mountainous areas, we are working with the next generation in mind as we try to protect the marine resources of the clear-streamed Kanna River, to understand the ecology of the prefectural fish (the ayu, or sweetfish), to increase the masu salmon resources through aquaculture alone, and to make the rainbow trout a sextiary sector industry.
