Problems and Future Developments in the Epidemic Prevention System for Imports of Seafood Animals

Professor, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of TokyoThe importance of protecting terrestrial animals from invasive diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease, is well understood in society. Invasion of infective diseases of seafood animals also has been dealing large blows to aquaculture as well as to capturing fisheries. However, since the prevention of their spread and elimination is almost impossible, the strengthening of epidemic prevention policies for imports in order to prevent their entry into the country, rather than policies focusing on containment and eradication of them after their arrival, is extremely important in future. This article explains current conditions of the epidemic prevention system for seafood animals and problems to be addressed. -
A Training Ship for Domestic Shipping Routes: the new Taisei-Maru begins service 〜the sea as a campus for training young people〜

The National Institute for Sea Training brings five ships under its unified management, trains future seafarers, and administers research on ship operations. As a strengthening measure for training domestic seafarers, the domestic route training vessel Taisei-Maru, long-awaited by the shipping industry, began operations in April of 2014. This article introduces current conditions for domestic route seafarers and the actual training being carried out on the domestic route training ship.
