Renewable Marine Energy Initiatives in Nagasaki Prefectural Government

Marine Industry Development Office, Industry and Labor Department, Nagasaki Prefectural GovernmentIn response to Japanese national government aims including the 'simultaneous realization of economic growth and reduced environmental impact' and 'regional revitalization through implementation of a society characterized by an environmentally-sound material cycle and harmonious coexistence with nature", Nagasaki Prefectural Government is promoting its leading-edge "Nagasaki Green New Deal Strategy Project". One of the six project groups comprising the Strategy Project is the "Marine Frontiers Project", which is implementing policies to develop marine industries related to the introduction of marine renewable energy. -
The Discovery of Mongolian Invasion Ships Buried beneath the Sea Floor

The Mongolian Empire, rulers over the continent, attacked Japan twice in the middle of the Kamakura era, the "Mongolian Invasions." In the second invasion, known as the Battle of Koan (1281), a huge flotilla of 4,400 ships and 140,000 men was dispatched, only to be destroyed by a typhoon in the bay of Imari. Until now, surveys revealed no trace of the Mongolian invasion ships. In 2011 however, a major survey was undertaken using the latest detection instruments, finally excavating the ships, which were buried under the sea floor mud though still in conditions allowing for reconstruction.

Development of Artificial Tail Fin for a Bottlenose Dolphin

Do you know of the dolphin named Fuji at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium? A dolphin losing its tail fin due to illness provided the serendipitous opportunity to try and develop an artificial substitute fin. Although we were almost frustrated repeatedly. excellent teamwork carried us through, making high jumps for Fuji possible once again.
