Why is There No Progress in the Removal of Foreign Flagships Run Ashore and Abandoned?
Mizuo KANNO Director, Zeni Lite Buoy Co., Ltd.(Former General Manager of the Planning and Publicity Department, The Japan Association of Marine Safety)
Scattered around Japan, many foreign vessels remain in the same coastal locations in which they were grounded during past maritime accidents and disasters. Despite the responsibility of removing such wrecks being the responsibility of shipping companies and owners, excuses such as being unable to pay the removal costs, mean that little progress is being made in their disbandment. Made all the more important by the severe influence these vessels have on Japan's marine environment, some kind of international response is required immediately.

The IOI's "Eco-Village Project" in the villages of Tamil Nadu in India is a step towards the fulfillment of sustainable coastal development. The focus has been on creating awareness for the self-employment of women through various programs that simultaneously promote ecological sustainability.
