Our oceans are divided into numerous specialized fields. Each field takes on their own research activities and projects, but the mutual understanding between them is highly insufficient. As we enter a new era, we require a kind of mutual relationship that surpasses the traditional cooperation framework. "Maritime Clusters" are one part of this new cooperation.

I always loved the sea since my childhood. One day it was a friend to play with, the other days, a friend to talk to, I even think it taught me the way of life. Today, when asked my opinion on ocean issues amongst expert researchers on ocean topics, I like to start with "What exactly was the sea to me" and "How we can deepen our understanding of the sea".
In reply to Shuuhei Konno's "Japan Ocean Concern" published in the second issue of this newsletter (September 5, 2000), I question Prof. Konno's thinking, from the marine transport point of view. Here is my opinion.
