Specialist for Recreational Fishing, Fisheries Coordination Division, Fisheries AgencyFrom the perspective of the sustainable use of fishery resources, recreational fishery as well as the fishery industries has become a considerable factor in the seas around Japan, and a proper response is being sought.Even more than the management of recreational fishery, the burden of expense (the price of fishing) on the use of resources by sports fishermen also remains a critical issue and as a response, the fisheries agency is giving positive consideration to be able to propose a framework that could earn the understanding of sports fishermen. -

The negotiation at IWC only reiterates the positions of both pro- and anti-whaling nations and there was no substantive discussion.Japan should set a multiple-stage target in the international negotiation, rather than intensifying the competition over the number of pro- and anti-whaling votes. The traditional whaling diplomacy of Japan should be revised in terms of a comprehensive national interest.
