Report: International Arctic Workshop "Ensuring Maritime Stability, Security and International Collaboration in a Changing Arctic"

The Ocean Policy Research Institute, Sasakawa Peace Foundation co-hosted the International Arctic Workshop "Ensuring Maritime Stability, Security and International Collaboration in a Changing Arctic" from July 14th to 16th in Tokyo with the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS).

The workshop priority was for the core Arctic littoral countries (United States, Canada, Russia, Denmark, and Norway) to begin to better understand key Asian states' (Japan, China, ROK, India, and Singapore) strategic interests and areas for future collaboration in Arctic maritime affairs. These areas of overlapping concern and opportunity were focused on how peace and stability can be ensured in the Arctic region; the role of international maritime law in guiding conduct in Arctic shipping, freedom of navigation, and Arctic environmental issues; the development of equitable and sustainable resource extraction, to include energy resources and fishing; and Arctic disaster management. More than 50 experts from the 10 countries discussed and exchanged opinions in these areas.
