OPRI’s Policy Recommendations based on findings of IPCC SROCC

The Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF) has issued a policy recommendation in response to the important messages relating to the ocean and climate change mentioned in the "Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC)" released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on September 25, 2019.

SROCC is the first report specializing in the linkage between climate change and the ocean and cryosphere (polar region and high mountains). The IPCC warns that some of the marine ecosystems are seeing phenomena that indicate that they have already passed a “tipping point” and that we are facing a crisis of the ocean, and even the planet, highlighting that "choices made now are critical for the future of our ocean." On the other hand, the report mentions that with more ambitious mitigation and adaptation measures, there are still possibilities remaining to respond to the changes occurring in the ocean.
OPRI-SPF hopes that this recommendation will help to guide future efforts by the Japanese government and various actors involved in the ocean, fisheries, and climate change sectors.
