150 Years of Amity & 50 Years of Alliance: Adopting an Enhanced Agenda for the U.S.-Japan Partnership ( June 17-18, 2010, Washington D.C. ) (Joint Statement)

Ocean Policy Research Foundation, in partnership with The Nippon Foundation, Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation United States of America, hosted a two-day symposium of "150 Years of Amity & 50 Years of Alliance: Adopting an Enhanced Agenda for the U.S.-Japan Partnership" in Washington, D.C. on 17 and 18 June 2010.
This conference was to bring together 60 leading American and Japanese policymakers, experts and academics, 30 each from the U.S. and Japan, in Washington. D. C., and reviewed the past 150-year and 50-year relationship between Japan and the United States; to overview Asia-Pacific circumstances in the 21st century, and furthermore, the world's state of affairs; to hold discussions in order to make the Japan-U.S. alliance, indispensable for both Japan and the United States, sustainable; to draw up a joint statement; and to dispatch a message on the necessity of deepened and strengthened Japan-U.S. relations in a wide range of fields.

Honorable Akihisa Nagashima, Japan Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense, was featured as the keynote speaker. Besides him Dr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation made the opening address, and the other distinguished figures with special statements were expected. These programs are shown in the attached agenda.
It would be the pleasure of the Ocean Policy Research Foundation if the establishment and dispatch of this symposium could provide efficacy of your thoughts for sustainable development and enhancement of the relationship, which is otherwise apt to loosen, between the United States and Japan.
