International Seminar
Conservation and Sustainable Use of Seaweed – International Trend and Challenges

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

Seaweed has been used as an important food ingredient in diverse food cultures in Japan and other Asian countries. In recent years, its use as an alternative material to livestock fertilizers and plastics has also been explored overseas. On the other hand, there are concerns that rising sea water temperatures and changes in the marine environment are having a negative impact on seaweed beds and seaweed cultivation. In Japan, seaweed bed restoration and seaweed cultivation efforts have been recognized as one of the carbon fixation and sequestration initiatives and credits have been accumulated for purchase by companies in other industries. In this seminar, we will discuss international trends surrounding seaweed and domestic initiatives with overseas experts.
